Second to the common cold, back pain is the most common reason for sick leave at work. Hardly anyone over fifty hasn’t had at least one serious episode of back pain or neck pain. Chances are you have experienced some serious back or neck pain. We go to our doctors and want instant results. Translation—we want pills. We want a quick fix. But pain killers, muscle relaxers, and steroids are likely to aggravate the problem and give unwanted bonuses of depression, slower healing, and drug dependency. Spine specialist Dr. Mark Brown says if you throw away the pills and walk it off 90% of the time you will recover from the problem and the pain—if fact you are more likely to recover and recover more quickly without the pills. Dr. Brown is an eminent orthopedic spine surgeon, is on the editorial board of four medical journals, and is a professor at the University of Miami. He is an MD and Ph.D., teaches, does research, and has a clinical practice. His new book, Conquer Back and Neck Pain: Walk It Off helps diagnose what kind of pain you have and determine what to do—and not do.

Information on Dr. Brown’s book is at www.SunriseRiverPress.com, where you can read excerpts or download the book. Information on his clinical services is at http://ortho.med.miami.edu/x40.xml?id=35629. Dr. Brickey’s other websites are www.DrBrickey.com and www.Anti-Aging-Speaker.com.

Dr. Vincent Giampapa teaches how you can have a lot of influence on what genes get turned on and off. This in turn has a big effect on your health and longevity. Rather than a fixed destiny, your genes continuously dialogue with what is happening in your body and to in your environment. Dr. Michelle May says trash the guilt, trash the rules, enjoy eating, and lose weight as well. Rather than feel trapped, she teaches confident, fearless eating. Dr. May is a Board Certified Family Physician and author of Am I Hungry? What to Do When Diets Don’t Work, and the CD Stop Dieting, Start Living. Back in January Dr. May taught us how to know when we are hungry as opposed to eating for emotional reasons. Today we are going to focus on how to enjoy eating more. In the second part of the show, we will focus on how to enjoy eating and lose weight even when you are on the road, on vacation, or in a fast food restaurant.

Dr. Ruthann Russo takes a very holistic approach to healthcare. Recently on Ageless Lifestyles Radio, she shared with us her health system advocacy strategies for getting what you need from doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies. In addition to her book, 7 steps to your best possible healthcare, she has done a very balanced study of the raw food movement. Her brand new book is The Raw Food Diet Myth. Frankly I didn’t know much about raw foods but I trusted Dr. Russo from our previous show. I also had a good friend tell me how he has gotten into raw foods and loves raw ice cream. When I read Dr. Russo’s book, I was so impressed with how instead of evangelizing for a movement, she gently makes the case with the perspective that most people who would consider raw food would want to wade in gradually and pick and choose what makes sense to them. Ten years ago organic foods were hard to find. Now we have supermarkets like Whole Foods and many mainstream grocery stores have organic food sections. It wouldn’t surprise me if ten years from now the raw food options are equally common.

Many of the most commonly performed medical procedures are ill advised and can do more harm than good. We go to our physicians and expect surgery of pills for our ills. Our physicians feel pressured to try to fulfill our expectations. Financial incentives provide little compensation for patient education but often richly reward performing procedures. Patients and physicians often don’t fully appreciate the statistics behind using evidence based medicine for choosing the best course of treatment. Or guest today is physician and physicist Dr. Alan Zelicoff, author of the brand new book, More Harm Than Good. If you or any family members are at risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, back pain or arthritis, you’ll want to be sure to listen and learn about how to avoid overtreatment and get the most effective treatment.

What you don’t know about healthcare can hurt you, even kill you. What if you knew how to get your doctor to focus on your goals, get the information you need from your doctor, and enjoy the process as well? What if you knew a little karate for getting specialists, hospitals, and nursing homes to do what they are supposed to do and share information with you? Would you like to know how to comprehend all those EOBs, bills, and statements? How about not paying $2 for an aspirin at a hospital? Would you like to know how to organize your medical records so you have the information when you need it and can even give it to your doctor?

Dr. Ruthann Russo teaches physicians and hospitals how to keep better records and provide better services. She teaches consumers how to navigate our disease care system to get the services they need. Her credentials include a Master’s degree in Public Health, a doctorate in Business Administration, and a law degree. Her brand new book is 7 Steps of Your Best Possible Healthcare. Blood tests Dr. Brickey recommended everyone get at least once:
    >homocystine –a common easily correctible cause of cardiovascular disease
    >A1C –the best test to catch diabetes early
    >iron –especially for men, make sure you don’t have too much (or too little)
    >C-reactive protein –catches problems with inflamation early (inflamation is a leading contributor to cardiovascular diesease and many other diseases)
    >VLDL –don’t settle for just total cholesterol, HDL and LDL level, the Very Low Density Lipids do the most damage.

I remember one of the songs my twins listened to just a few years ago said, when you help someone smaller, you make you feel taller. Clergy urge us to be generous and do good deeds. But what does science say about altruism and helping others? Dr. Stephen Post has done extensive research on love and doing good. Dr. Post is a bioethics professor at Case Western Reserve University, President of the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love, and author of Why Good Things Happen to Good People. He has shown that the Fountain of Youth has been inside us all the time. And while becoming a more loving, giving person won’t make you live forever, his research shows that it will help you live a longer, healthier, happier life. In the first part of the show we will look at love, happiness, and what makes a good life. In the second part of the show we will get specific about how to live a more loving live.

In the first part of the show, we will focus on how to know what colors enhance your appearance. In the second part of the show we will look at how our ideal colors shift with age and how to stay in style. We’ll also look at issues like fit, texture, patterns, and accessories.
